PURE DEFENDER DISINFECTANT
PURE DEFENDER DISINFECTANT
Pure Defender ULTRA-Lyte is a Canadian-based product, using hypochlorous acid as the active ingredient. Hypochlorous acid is a natural and highly effective disinfectant. It is on Health Canada’s approved list of disinfectants likely to be effective and may be used against SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Hypochlorous acid is strong on germs but gentle on the environment. It is a cost effective and safe alternative to alcohol and chlorine-based disinfectants.
IMPORTANT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
What is Hypochlorous Acid?
Hypochlorous Acid (HA) is a natural substance with high efficacy towards pathogens. HA is produced in the human immune system (in white blood cells) as a defence against infection.
How is Hypochlorous Acid made?
Hypochlorous acid is produced when a brine solution of water and sodium chloride (salt) is subjected to an electric current (electrolysis). The electric current dissolves the chlorine in the salt solution to create the hyprochlorous acid. Minuscule traces of salt remain in the solution after electrolysis.
Is Hypochlorous Acid stable?
To increase the stability of hypochlorous acid a post production ph-adjustment is needed. This is accomplished by the addition of food-grade citric acid, which can be found naturally in many fruits.
What is the shelf life of Pure Defender?
The shelf life of Pure Defender is 1 year.
Is Pure Defender food safe?
Yes! Hypochlorous Acid has been used in the food-processing industry for years.
What are the “other” ingredients in Pure Defender?
Trace amounts of sodium chloride (salt) are left over from the electrolysis process and citric acid.
SO WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
Hypochlorous acid and alcohol-based disinfectants can both be effective. In the list below we have highlighted their main differences to show why hypochlorous acid is a better choice:
HYPOCHLOROUS ACID
- Kills 99.9% of bacteria
Consists of 100% natural ingredients
- Affordable for every budget
A compound produced naturally by white blood cells
- Compound consists of electrolyzed salt water and citric acid
- Neutral Smell
- No Sticky Residue
- Non-Flammable
ALCOHOL DISINFECTANTS
- Kills 99.9% of bacteria
- Affordable for every budget
Can cause dry skin and skin and eye irritation
- Flammable
Not food safe
- Not safe for children or prenatal women
- Must consist of a minimum of 60% alcohol
Ingestion can lead to alcohol toxicity
- Strong smell

THE HISTORY OF HYPOCHLOROUS ACID
Pure Defender’s active ingredient is hypochlorous acid and it has been used extensively in hospitals, dermatology, wound care and dentistry as a disinfectant for decades.
Hypochlorous Acid was first approved in Europe and has been in use for decades. Around the year 2000 it was approved in the USA and Canada for various disinfecting uses in the healthcare and food processing industries.
One of the problems bringing hypochlorous acid to the general consumer disinfectant marketplace has been its lack of stability and therefore a short shelf-life. For this reason hypochlorous acid was produced and used promptly within in the facilities where it was needed.
Recently, chemists have been working on ways to stabilize hypochlorous acid to further increase its effectiveness and widen its use. With the addition of citric acid, hypochlorous acid now has an effective lifespan of a year, provided it is kept in opaque containers out of direct sunlight. Pure Defender products are all contained within appropriate opaque containers.
